Fixing the Dinosaur Part One: The OS

We are (basically) done renovating the Dinosaur, and we want to discuss the process we took to renovate it. The entire story will probably take a couple of posts, so we're going to discuss it over several posts, starting with this one.
In this post, we discuss installing the OS which we chose to put on our Dinosaur, to replace the 8 year old Windows XP that was running on it before. We chose to install Ubuntu 10.10 because of its speed, lightness (the Dinosaur only has a 40 GB hard drive, so everything needs to be light,) and modern appearance. Because of a problem with a lightning storm with the previous owner, the wifi on the Dino was not working correctly, so we could not install the OS over the air. Instead, we had to order the OS on a CD from Britain (That was the "Royal Mail" we received earlier this month. When the CD finally arrived (after about 8 weeks of waiting) we installed the OS.
Once it was all up and running, we were still having problems connecting by wifi, so we ran a 14 foot cable out the back of our computer and into the wall, as can be seen in the video below. We later do solve the wifi problem, which we will discuss in a future post.
